Today, moments before the kick-off of a U-9 soccer game, the center ref for the game called captains from each team for the coin toss-- the winner of the coin toss may choose either to take the ball first or to defend a particular side-- but after one failed coin toss and then the consequent explanation to the three away team captains that one of them must call it in the air, the center ref tossed the coin again and the away team captain called "tails" and the coin came up tails, and once this was announced, the three kids from the away team raised their hands in exultation, cheered, and ran off . . . ostensibly, to tell their team they won the coin toss-- but we had to call them back and explain what the coin toss was for and, as always with children under ten, they chose to have the ball.
