There, But For the Grace of God, Go I . . .

Barbara Kingsolver's novel Demon Copperhead retells the story of the orphan boy David Copperfield in modern-day Appalachia—Demon Copperhead survives neglect, the foster care system, addiction, and the catastrophe of the opioid crisis, which hit Appalachia especially hard; despite the hardship, there is a rural beauty to the setting, but about the only thing I could relate to in this tragic story of persistence is the fact that Demon Copperhead hurts his knee playing sports, and it really bothers him (but luckily, doctors aren't still doling out oxy prescriptions for any modicum of pain, or I might have ended up addicted as well).
