Sometimes I complain that there are too many good TV shows and it's impossible to keep up with everyone's recommendations, but that's not a complaint, it's actually the opposite of a complaint, it's a compliment . . . so great job TV, you've become so excellent you've completely overwhelmed me, to the point where I don't watch you at all.

I've been saying this for the last two years but I think TV has been completely ruined by the serial nature of every show (in addition to the quality) - you HAVE to watch every episode to appreciate the entire story. It worked for me on the Sopranos years ago but that was one show - I'm not going to make a life commitment to forty plus shows. Now I only watch sports, Cops, and Two and a Half Men reruns. I hope podcasts don't head in this direction, but the Serial podcast could be the Sopranos of podcasts.
In that vein you should try River Monsters, Naked and Afraid, and Fuck That's Delicious. The title of each program says all you need to know, and in case the titles aren't clear enough they always start with a 15 second introduction to the show's premise. Every episode of each respective show is more or less the same but still interesting.

we watched all the "river monsters" and loved that-- good idea-- you're right, too many serial shows. i can't follow all these story arcs.
even sitcoms have more of a story arc . . . i am watching the office with the kids and you need to watch them in order to really appreciate the characters
Even Master of None had an arc. I saw a new fishing show this weekend called Fish or Die--despite the stupid name it's worth watching. Four guys in their late thirties not only fish the daylights out of some fish, they fish the fish in previously unfished waters. This involves bushwhacking their way through the jungles of Belize to get at these weird sinkholes that somehow connect to the ocean, allowing small tarpon (not tampon) to migrate in and then grow too big to get out. Some of the tarpons were huge.
i need to start actually fishing again, but i could start by watching some shows
