Will the Streak Continue? Let's Hope Not . . .

My son Ian has come so close to good behavior at school the past two weeks -- both weeks he had good days Monday through Thursday, but both weeks his teacher sent a note home on Friday, and both notes detailed an "f-word" violation; two weeks ago he wrote the f-word on another student's notebook (he claims he was dared, not exactly a great defense) and last week he said the f-word in music class when a fellow third grader "lied about him and left him out" and while this is quite an impressive streak, I'm really hoping it doesn't continue, and I'm wondering if I should pull him out of school this Friday to break the juju.

  1. Was it a TRIPLE DOG dare? If so, it's a reasonable defense. At a minimum it obviates any mens rea.

  2. look, learning to use the f-word is every bit as important as the standard things conveyed in an educational environment. i say you let him fly his f-flag. if you can't say it, you can't do it, as a wise man once said.

  3. i agree, and i've given him some scenarios when it is appropriate to use it (such as when your children are wrestling in a moving car and won't stop, though there is heavy traffic).

he certainly has no problem using it in context, with the proper tone, i just need him to refrain in school and on the soccer field, or he's going to suffer some serious consequences. he has played minecraft or watched tv in weeks and he's got a lego set still in the amazon box sitting on the counter, so i'm really hoping, for all of our sakes, that he makes it through.

  8. Talked to Dave today. As it turns out, Ian's actual quote in music class wasn't all that bad. He said, "You lied about me and left me out. Do it again, motherf-er, and I will slit your f-in' throat from ear to f-in' ear and f- you in the bloody f-in gash." It's normal grade school teasing.
