Evite Etiquette

Dear Abby . . . when you reply to a party invitation on Evite, shouldn't you make a clever comment? -- for instance, if someone goes through the trouble of naming their pig roast "There Will Be Pork," then shouldn't you reply with something funny that acknowledges this allusion, such as "we will drink your porkshake!" --- or, as my friend Tim suggests, is this quick-witted wordplay pretentious, annoying and gauche?

  1. The whole point of the "comment" field for your evite response (much like this blog) is to show your dazzling wit so that other party-goers will seek you out, or at least have something to say when they meet you at the party. "OMG can't wait ;)" and other responses of that ilk don't add a ton of value to the evite process. Tim is flat wrong.

  2. concur. tim is obviously a dimwit, intimidated by the clever bon mots native to evite culture.

really just kinda wanted to use 'bon mot' in a sentence. i'm sure tim is no dumber than the average jersey resident.

    oh. sorry.

  4. really hope that tim = tr. otherwise, the underlying premise of that previous comment goes off the rails.

  6. So ... what was your witty comment?

  7. Mine was "A PT Anderson-themed pig roast!" which is another way of saying "I get your cultural reference!" Dave said "I'll drink your porkshake." which is another way of saying "I get your cultural reference AND I have a relevant cultural reference with which to reply."

  9. As you have approached Oscar Wilde-like levels of wit on this blog, you should share your gift and go to evite and comment immediately. To deny other party goers a comment from Dave would be wrong.

You should hit on Tim's wife at the party, though, just to prove you are straight.

  11. i may start just having "evite parties"-- the only get together is on the evite, where people can vie to make the wittiest comment.

my first party will be a hawaiian luau on cinco de mayo, and i will call it "hawaii five o de mayo"

  12. I stand corrected. As Zman pointed out, Evite provides a forum for witty repartee, witty wittiness if you will. I now know that Evite is so much more than a place to go to get the time, date and address of a party. Now I, like others in the know, can wander the party seeking out "bobbyR284@yahoo.com" for his clever thoughts and ignore "A.Zman@prodigy.net" because he made no response at all.

Word has it that McSweeneys is shutting down their website in favor of an invitation portal that promises to be the height of sometimes clever but always pretentious comments.
