Are "The Hold Steady" Sincere . . . or Sincerely Ironic?

I'm not sure if The Hold Steady is sincere or not, but they seem like a Spinal Tap version of Bruce Springsteen, updated for the times, and that's not knocking them-- they're very entertaining.
